Back in January, BlackRock announced four new international sector suites under the iShares brand and launched the first five ETFs within those suites. Last Friday (7/16/10), iShares completed the rollout on one of these suites, the All-Country World Index excluding US, with nine new ETFs.

The underlying indexes from MSCI target the 10 GICS sector indexes for the MSCI All Country World ex USA Index. Each uses a free float-adjusted market capitalization weighted approach designed to capture the market performance of developed and emerging market countries, excluding the United States. As a result, many of the new ETFs have emerging markets represented in their top five country allocations.

Most non-US sector fund lineups have not met with success. When iShares began the rollout of four additional ones in January, I thought there were too many suites vying for attention and some would fail. Just a week later, WisdomTree announced the closure of 10 funds, including seven of its international sector ETFs

Many major equity research organizations believe it is much more important to categorize international equities by sector rather than country. This new lineup from iShares now allows individual investors to take a similar approach.

All the new ETFs have an expense ratio of 0.48% and appear more diversified than existing international sector suites. For completeness, I’ve included AXFN, the financial ETF, along with the nine new ETFs below even though AXFN was launched in January.
