Do you remember the last serious 3rd party contender for President? It wasn’t long ago that a little-known Arkansas governor entered the White House despite running against a popular sitting President. How did it happen? A Texas businessman, tired of Washington ways, organized a populist campaign against the establishment. This upstart politician ran a decent campaign managing to take enough votes away from President George H.W. Bush to deliver the victory to Governor Bill Clinton.
Who was this famous spoiler? Ross Perot.
You might remember how Perot bought airtime to bombard the American people with charts and figures about the economy, deficit spending, and the like. Many people liked his message — most people were bored. Still, Perot garnered enough attention to capture over 19,741,000 popular votes in November 1992 — a significant accomplishment for a 3rd party candidate in a political system dominated by two parties.
In case you ever wondered what Perot was thinking about the economy, rest assured. There’s now a place on the great-WWW where you can check out his latest facts and figures on the economy. And yes, those famous charts are back in force. At first glance, it’s very interesting and well worth the visit.
