ETF Stats for March 2009

The month of March 2009 brought two new ETFs and no new ETNs. There were six ETF closures during the month as SPA closed all six of their ETFs and exited the business. They are the second ETF firm to close shop this year, following in the footsteps of Northern Trust and their NETS brand ETFs.

With a net decrease of four, the overall count of U.S. listed ETFs and ETNs dropped to 839 at the end of March, down slightly from the year-end tally of 845.

The number of products on Deathwatch declined for the first time, dropping from 171 to 162. The percentage of exchange-traded note (ETNs) on Deathwatch increased to 47.1%. Nearly one out of every five exchange-traded products (ETFs and ETNs) is now on Deathwatch.
