ETF Deathwatch for October 2010

October 4, 2010 by
Filed under Commentary, ETF Deathwatch 2010

The number of exchange-traded products (ETPs) on ETF Deathwatch declined slightly this month to 149 (113 ETFs and 36 ETNs).  Six ETFs were delisted and closed during September, while the quantity on Deathwatch only declined by four from last month as other products were quick to fill the void.

The six September closures consisted of four from Claymore (CRO, EXB, IRO, and ROB) and two from Geary (OOK and TXF).  All were previous members of ETF Deathwatch so their closings should not have come as a surprise to regular readers.  Geary no longer has any listed products and stated its intent to exit the ETF marketplace.

Much of the former Claymore product line was rebranded with the Guggenheim label in September.  However, most of the products not acquiring the new brand find themselves on ETF Deathwatch this month:

  • Claymore CEF Index GS Connect ETN (GCE)
  • Claymore U.S. Capital Markets Micro-Term Fixed Income (ULQ)
  • Claymore U.S. Capital Markets Bond (UBD)
  • Wilshire 4500 Completion ETF (WXSP)
  • Wilshire 5000 Total Market ETF (WFVK)
  • Wilshire Micro-Cap ETF (WMCR)

Vanguard seriously stepped up the level of competition in the ETF arena during September with two significant launches (see Vanguard Declares War in Fight for Broad Market ETF Supremacy and Vanguard Launches Second Assault on iShares).  These actions were likely a contributing factor in Old Mutual’s decision last month to exit the space and liquidate its ETFs in October.

Firms with a large percentage of their products on ETF Deathwatch should also consider exiting the business, or figure out how to become profitable.  Sponsors with 100% of their ETFs on this month’s list include FaithShares, Grail, and TDX.

The dubious honor of being on the top of the list this month belongs to iShares MSCI Far East Financials Sector (FEFN).  This ETF almost went the entire month of September without a trade, but then some brave person stepped forward with a 100-share trade on September 29.  That was the only trade for FEFN during the month, putting its average daily volume at just five shares.  Direxion Daily 2-Year Treasury Bull 3x (TWOL) was not far behind.  It too had only one trade during the month, but it was for 200 shares.

For the 17 new products launched in March, this is the first time they are eligible for the list and six of them are included below.  There are currently 114 products that have been granted temporary immunity because they are less than six months old.

Listed below are the 149 products on ETF Deathwatch for September that are at least six months old and failed to generate at least $100,000 in average daily dollar volume last month.

The ETF death watch list is helpful . It. would be even more helpful if the ticker symbol would be alphabetasized.

I like to ask ::: If you are in an ETF and it gets delisted,( it dies) Is your money gone??? Does it go to 0 ??

  5. Ron Rowland on October 11th, 2010 12:34 pm

    Christine,

What typically happens is the sponsor announces a closure a couple of weeks in advance, giving you a chance to sell prior to the closure. If you are still holding shares after the last day of trading, then there is usually a liquidation process and your money is returned to you (your brokerage account) about a week later.

I always recommend that you sell your shares as soon as you learn of an impending closure and be sure to use a limit order. You should try to avoid the liquidation process because the fund may assess a closing fee.

I say “typically” and “usually” above because there is a least one example of a sponsor that delisted its funds but never liquidated them leaving shareholders with a huge obstacle to selling their shares and getting their money back.

    Ron

    Moshe,

You commented: “The ETF death watch list is helpful . It would be even more helpful if the ticker symbol would be alphabetized.”

I agree, and encourage Ron Rowland to have his techie change the display to permit sorting by column.

In the interim, you can highlight the list, copy and paste into a spreadsheet program. I use Excel and it worked for me. I manage my family portfolio and it’s a relatively large lump of investments. To spread the risk, I’m using Vanguard ETFs and — so far — I’m pleased with their performance. So I wanted to see if any of my Vanguard ETFs made the ETF Deathwatch.

Glad to find none on the list and look forward to Ron’s observations in the future.
