The size of the ETF Billion Dollar Club dropped to only 11 members, a -26% plunge from last month’s roster of 15. Back after a short one-month absence is Direxion Daily Financial Bear 3x Shares (FAZ). The five funds leaving the list are SPDR Gold Trust (GLD), iShares MSCI Brazil (EWZ), ProShares Ultra S&P500 (SSO), HOLDRS Oil Services (OIH), and iShares MSCI EAFE (EFA).
The 11 members of the ETF Billion Dollar Club are just 1.3% of the entire ETF and ETN population, yet they were responsible for 61% of the value traded in July. This is vastly different from the other end of the spectrum, where the 142 names on the ETF Deathwatch list account for 16.6% of the ETF and ETN population while only generating a barely measurable 0.00046% of the value traded.
Trading activity in SPDR S&P 500 (SPY), the only member of the ETF Ten Billion Dollar Club, was down for the month but still managed to swamp everything else. SPY had an Average Daily Value Traded (ADVT) of only $18.3 billion, its lowest level in more than two years. However, it still accounted for 29.9% of the value traded in July.
